Oral and maxillofacial surgery is specialty of dentistry that includes the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, injuries, and defects involving both the functional and esthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region. After four years of postgraduate dental education, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon completes four or more years of intensive, postdoctoral, hospital-based surgical residency training. Oral and maxillofacial surgery residents spend significant time rotating through related medical and surgical fields such as internal medicine, critical care medicine, general surgery, anesthesiology, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, pathology, and emergency medicine.

The American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) is the certifying board for the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery in the United States. It is recognized and approved by the council on Dental Education and Licensure of the American Dental Association. The objectives of the ABOMS are to elevate the standards of the specialty and to aid oral and maxillofacial surgeons in their efforts to provide optimum health care to their patients. To this end, the ABOMS establishes criteria for competence and knowledge that determine a sufficient and acceptable ability to practice the specialty.

Those individuals who demonstrate achievement of the requisite training, experience and knowledge are granted Board Certification, indicated by title Diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

In order to become Board Certified, and individual must complete intensive application and examination processes. Applicants to the ABOMS must provide verifiable evidence of their educational and training qualifications. Each application for board certification is reviewed by the ABOMS Credential Committee. The process of board certification requires the candidate to pass both a thorough qualifying examination and a rigorous oral certifying examination

The ABOMS strongly encourages its Diplomat to continue their professional development through various educational experiences. Your Board Certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon is expected to maintain current competence through ongoing professional education that includes national meetings, seminars, lectures, special courses, panels, symposia, and self-assessment tools.
